You should also look on travelzoo.com. If you sign up for e-mail alerts, you'll get a weekly newsletter with their Top 20 deals.

I have used Priceline, Hotwire, Orbitz and the airlines themselves. The latter will top any discounts online, but Priceline can beat them on occasion.

Expedia has a price guarantee. The "catch" is that you need to find the lower price within 24 hours. I also use Hotwire, etc. for hotels with very good luck. For flights, have you used kayak.com? Great for comparisons. You can also price watch on TripAdvisor.

"Lesser Populace"? It would appear that they have lumped you into it with us?

I always use the discount sites for travel. I'm supposed to get an extra discount above and beyond the lesser populace. What I found was a friend booked the same flight, same day everything, using the same site without the supposed extra discount and his flight was $100 less.
I tried everything I could think of to figure out why and was constantly told that no matching prices would be done and that any other parties deals on the site could not be discussed.
Expedia sucks the big one.

One of the cool things about sites like Hotwire, Priceline, Expedia, etc., is if multiple airlines offer the same flight and you want to know which one is a shorter duration or which one has shorter layovers or things like that. You can sort the search results by flight duration, which I've found very useful. You might find that paying a few dollars extra could save you a few hours of layover time.

I found the same to be true BMRR. I have gotten some better prices on flights calling the airline direct. I like to comparison shop with Priceline.

I've gotten great deals on hotels and rental cars with Hotwire -- significantly lower than from the hotel and rental agencies' own sites. But for flights, I've never found any of the discount sites to have lower rates than the airlines' own sites. That said, the discount sites are very helpful for comparison shopping between different airlines.

What are you trying to do? Flight? Hotel? Total trip? There are good sites.

My experience has been that go to the company websites for good deals. Delta does pretty good unless you are leaving tomorrow.
