The coming battle over natural gas

Financial Post -- From co-dependent natural gas consumers and developers, Canada and the United States may soon be competing with each other as both countries start advancing their production plans for liquefied natural gas (LNG).

“I think there is a sense of competition at the moment between the U.S. and Canada for the [Asian] market,” said Noel Tomnay, head of global gas at Wood Mackenzie, an energy research and consulting firm.

Rising natural gas production on both sides of the border, coupled with benchmark Henry Hub prices tracking 31-year lows, are forcing North American producers to find growing markets willing to pay more.

“Currently, the U.S. is clearly advantaged because it has the existing infrastructure,” Mr. Tomnay said.

Gee, I guess we'll just have to ship more of our gas/oil over there (since Obama doesn't want it) & that'll nullify the LNg war!!!

We in Canada have the problem the worst for we set ourselves up to ship oil and gas to the US.

For us to ship to Asia, we would have to fight every environmentalist and every aboriginal for every foot through B.C. from Alberta. British Columbia is known to us as the province the most full of "Tree Huggers".

Always amazes me that you can ship bulk commodities like this around the world and still have it be affordably priced.

doesn't matter what we have, we've got mega gallons of oil in Alaska - the problem is with the LEADER of this country - don't have one now - just a pretend leader who want wants to grow algee and use our tax dollars for his buddys to build useless solar panels

I don't think the U.S. has an enough "existing infrastructure" for the development of our natural gas resources. More building is needed but the greedy oil industry doesn't want that to happen as it may adversely affect their obscene billions in profits from oil.

What has happened to all the talk from the Obama administration that we need a good strong energy policy? That's one area everyone agrees on but nothing has been done about it over the last 40 years. It is time for them to get started.

...I sure wouldn't want to live ANYWHERE near where those floating mega-bombs are being loaded or filled or emptied...they'd level everything within a mile if they went off...slow down production until usage and storage capabilities are up...

People will be whining in 10 years about how high natural gas cost as we ship more and more overseas. It is a global economy which determines energy prices not where the product is extracted. We need more research and development into alternative energy and more efficient use of energy.

How can Asia buy ours cheaper than produce their own gas supplies?

Because they are using our own Worthless Dollars to buy something that has actual value and save their natural resources for later.

The U.S. has a disadvantage because it does not have an effective Energy Policy. The current POTUS and former POTUS all share blame, but the guy in the seat now is the one holding the ball. Hopefully, he'll do something his former POTUS did not or could not do. Hopefull, but not hold my breath.
