Fire blazes at California refinery; residents ordered indoors

Reuters -- A fire struck the core of Chevron Corp's large Richmond, California, refinery on Monday evening, sending flames and a column of smoke into the air and prompting authorities to order nearby residents indoors.

The fire, which authorities said was still blazing more than two and a half hours after it erupted, hit the sole crude unit at the 245,000 barrel per day (bpd) plant, which accounts for one-eighth of the state's refining capacity.

A lasting outage at the refinery could cause a swift rise in gasoline prices across the West Coast, a region that is isolated from other markets.

Nearby residents were advised to shelter in place, an order often given during significant refinery accidents to shield against possible exposure to dangerous chemicals or smoke.

with all the near record profits that Pig Oil makes, one would think, there was money to upkeep these important pieces in the petroleum industry.

It's true no new refineries have been built. But existing ones have been expanded. There is more refining capacity in the United States right now than in any time in history. More new refineries will not improve supply or drop prices. It would just drive some of the older smaller refineries out of business.

Now if a new competitive refinery was in full operation just down the road.... Oh, http://freedombytheway.com/2011/03/02/yippee-two-new-oil-refineries-in-development-first-in-us-in-35-years/ doesn't say they are just down the road in CA.

Interesting, big oil takes out another refinery.

Result? Gas prices automatically go UP, UP, UP! They make more money by doing less and avoiding costly repairs and maintenance.

Only in America!!!

You know darn well if it was hurting the bottom line for the oil barons they would have an alternative plan in place since there is a fire at this refinery or others in that area several times a year.

Since no new refineries have been approved in decades, the existing refineries continue to age and deteriorate. As demand increases, the impact of one less refinery can and does affect gas prices due to less supply.

Scene: A cigarette butt flies out a car window and a refinery goes up in flames.

The government created hell that is California is just a preview of what waits for the rest of us if we keep turning to the government for help. If California hadn't legislated themselves such a unique fuel environment with their dismal array of requirements, they wouldn't be in this situation.

Keep your tanks and gas cans full for the next 5 or 6 weeks. High prices and spot shortages are possible.

This will certainly affect prices in the immediate area. The price affect may spread outward, depending on near-by capacity.

This is not good. It will probably affect all US consumers of oil products and it will last a while. Oh well, scratch this year's vacation.

West Coast gasoline market is "isolated from other markets" because they chose to specify boutique blends for their fuel, which is not made expect specifically to sell there.

This also goes to explain some of the extra cost of fuel in their little piece of the world... along with the extra taxes slapped on that fuel by their government rulers.
