I am glad that something passed in our blocked Congress - but we do still need Safety Standards.

@vulcan96 - now that is a truly ignorant comment!
What has Mr. Boehner accomplished? 31 repeal attempts of the affordable healthcare act and probably the same number of anti-women's health measures.
Of course it was rushed through - the republicons don't really know how to write legislation, just take it from their corporate masters and introduce it (see ALEC).

Toyota killed over 50 people with their accelerator problem and they knew about for years. Someone should have been hung out to dry.

Also included in this bill was making it illegal for cigarette shops to have rolling machines for cigarettes. This has nothing to do with highways or safety of vehicles. Sorry I believe any bill proposed should deal only with one thing at a time no add ons or other things that have nothing to do with the bill. Just shows me how distorted and corrupt our Congress and government has become we need to start over with representation from all income brackets not just the rich and greedy.

It should have been tougher as $35 million is chump change. Fine them 5% of the MSRP of the vehicles affected. That way if 100,000 $35K SUVs weren't recalled in time, it would be a fine of $175 million.

Ever notice how these types of bills get rushed through congress, but important ones are fought tooth and nail for years before anything positive happens. Term limits would take care of this problem. All bills would never be rushed and would be discussed in their entirety by people genuinely interested in them, instead of the lazy do nothing octogenariens we currently have

New Highway Bill is Okayed Without Safety Standards
Glock you posted - Something we can all agree on.
??????????????
Perhaps you are correct if we all have guns (Glocks)!
However, perhaps we do not need guns to promote safety standards.

Geez, people act like this is repealing all the safety laws. It's just not adding more rules that we probably don't need. How often are your rear seatbelts buckled, anyway?

One thing at a time. Not tacking on other safety measures may seem like a missed opportunity, but new safety measures have more impact when they are passed on their own merits.

Actually, Congress did a sell job this session - NO budget, LOTS of BS, and then they went on vacation! Actually, that's the good part. When they're on vacation at least they're not doing too much damage.

I'm all for safety but there is a fine line between safety and intrusiveness. The black box is intrusive. Rear seat belt chimes could just be annoying.

Yep we new no new safety regulations. Just vote obama out in November and folks can get back to work again once some of regulations are relaxed.
